Questions and answers

8Terminal is an SSH client for macOS, iPadOS and iOS with SFTP, port forwarding and a local encrypted vault. It has no account and no server of ours.

Contact: the8terminal@gmail.com — write in English or Serbian. Please include your macOS or iOS version and the app version (Settings → About).

Do I need an account?
No. There is nothing to sign up for. Your hosts, credentials and keys live in an encrypted vault on your own device.
I forgot my master password. Can you recover my vault?
No, and neither can anyone else. The vault is encrypted with a key derived from that password; we never receive it and hold no copy. Restore from a .8tvault backup if you have one.
What does 8Terminal Pro add?
End-to-end encrypted vault sync between your own devices, and device linking. It is $5.99 (€5.99, £5.99) once for every device on your Apple Account and your Family Sharing group. Everything single-device stays free: multiple vaults, encrypted cloud backup, .8tvault export and restore, and the AI assistant.
How do I restore a purchase on a new device?
Settings → Vault sync → Restore Purchases, signed in with the same Apple Account.
How do I bring my hosts over from Termius?
The Mac App Store build cannot read another app's data, so a separate free tool does the export. Download the 8Terminal Termius Migrator, run it, save the file it produces, then in 8Terminal choose Import → 8Terminal export file.
Can I use my SSH agent, 1Password or a YubiKey on the Mac?
Yes, through an SSH agent. The App Store sandbox only lets 8Terminal reach an agent socket inside its own container, so Keychain → Security shows the exact path and the one-line command to start or bridge your agent there. Security keys (sk- keys) work through the agent too.
Is anything sent from my device?
Only if you turn it on. Crash reporting is off by default; when enabled, a report carries a stack trace, the app version and the OS version — never hostnames, usernames, terminal output, file paths or anything from your vault. The AI assistant sends only the text you explicitly choose to share, to the provider you configured. The exception is Auto mode, which you switch on yourself: it also sends the goal you give it, the read-only commands it runs and what they print.
What does Auto mode do?
Auto mode is a switch in the AI assistant. Off, the assistant suggests a command and you choose whether to run it. On, you give it a goal and it runs read-only checks on your Linux server by itself, without touching your terminal, and reads the results. It stops and asks before any command that changes something, and when a command asks for a password it offers your saved passwords and waits for you. You can press Stop at any time. It is off after you lock the vault or restart the app, and on iPhone and iPad a run ends when you leave the app. What the checks print is sent to your AI provider, so avoid asking it to look at files that hold secrets.
